small-heat-logoStiebel Eltron is a German company with a good history, which starts back in 1920s. Although the company target mostly European markets (especially Germany and UK), their are rapidly expanding to other markets, including US. Their latest electric tankless water heater product is the Tempra Plus line. Here’s what you’ll find out from this review:

  • what are the specs of the 5 Tempra Plus models
  • which of them suits your home
  • what are the main positives and negatives, including a discussion over reliability and expectations
  • what’s the best price for each of them

Before I dip into this guide, I’d like to point out that Stiebel Eltron is one of my favorite brands. I’ve worked with their products for quite a while, and I’ve never has an issue either installing of servicing their units. I find their product quality to be much higher than the average, and I definitely recommend considering buying one of their water heaters. But let’s leave the general talk and focus on our subject. Depending on where you live, here’s what model you should consider:

Tempra Plus chart

Tempra 15 Plus 14.4 kW

The Tempra 15 Plus Electric Water Heater can be considered as one of the most powerful water heaters of 15 kW out there. It is also less expensive than its gas-type counterparts. In addition to this, the Tempra Plus has been completely redesigned from inside and out, providing now a constant temperature, no matter the flow size.

Specifications:

  • Sleek design, awesome single flow sensor design.
  • Weights 16.1 lbs., measures 17 x 15 x 5 inches.
  • delivers up to 4.5 GPM

  • Proven reliability, seismic proof construction.
  • No venting required.
  • Great savings on electric bills.

  • Constant temperature output, as this device can eliminate any unpleasant temperature fluctuation quite easily.
  • You will get water for up to 2 showers working at the same time.
  • Good warranty and great quality.

Cons:

  • The instruction manual tends to be a little sketchy.
  • Could use a pressure relief valve which is not included in the package, for extra precaution.

The Tempra 15 Plus is very easy to install as it doesn’t require venting, and the same is true for the other water heaters in this article. It is the easy to install and use, lasts long, but it is rather costly. Fortunately, I’ve found a good price for this unit.

Tempra 20 Plus 19.2 kW

Perhaps the best among the Tempra Plus line, the 20 model is the right water heater for those needing to save space for dryers, washers, or any other appliance. The Tempra 20 Plus will produce all the hot water you might ever need in your condo or home, as it delivers maximum 8GPM. In addition to this, this water heater features high quality circuit boards and flow switches. This unit is perfect for people with 1 bath, living in the northern US.

Specifications:

  • Sleek design, awesome single flow sensor design.

  • The device might not be suitable for high demanding households, with 2 baths or more.

The Tempra 20 Plus features high quality parts, just like the other water heaters in this article. Long story short, you will save money on energy bills, avoid unwanted fluctuations in temperature and secure a unit that will last you for decades. Here’s the best price for this unit.

Tempra 24 Plus 24kW

The Tempra 24 Plus is perfect for medium sized homes with 2 bathrooms. You can connect up to 6 heating elements to this unit, including sinks, showers, washing machines and dishwashers. It also delivers maximum 8GPM, but can heat water to higher temperatures (or better said, it can handle higher temperature differences, as all Stiebel Eltron units heat the water to maximum 185°F, after which the the switches automatically decouple the heating).

Specifications:

  • Weights 16.1 lbs. (same as the other 2 models). Measures 17 x 15 x 5 inches.
  • Delivers up to 8 GPM, but as stated above, with better heating.
  • Electronic temperature control.
  • Silent operation.
  • Proven reliability, seismic proof construction.
  • No venting required.
  • Great savings on electric bills.
  • 240 voltage, 24kW, working pressure 150 PSI, minimum flow to activate 0.5 GPM.

  • It’s electric, so it doesn’t require venting.
  • Handles medium homes, in colder climates.

Cons:

  • You might have troubles installing the unit by yourself.
  • A little bit pricey.

Stiebel Eltron has a great customer service, which brings value to purchasing this water heater. For most US homes, the Tempra 24 Plus will produce hot water without any issues at all. Compared to the models reviewed above, its generous capacity allows better heating at higher flow rates. Overall, it is well worth the money, and a lot of people agree with me on this.

Tempra 29 Plus 28.8 kW

The Tempra 29 Plus will not only provide you with enough water to cover your entire house, but will also allow you to control the temperature very precisely. In addition to this, the Tempra 29 Plus can heat up quickly, commonly in less than one minute. Considering a 15% savings on your electric bill, this device may save you up to $30 each month.

Specifications:

  • Weights 19 lbs. Measures 17 x 15 x 5 inches.
  • Delivers up to 8 GPM for 6 heating elements, just like in the case of the 24 Plus model.
  • As the others, has electronic temperature control and operates quietly.
  • Proven reliability, seismic proof construction.
  • No venting required.
  • 240 voltage, 28.8kW, working pressure 150 PSI, minimum flow to activate 0.77 GPM.

Cons:

  • Installation costs might be high.
  • Requires a minimum 200 AMP household electrical service.

The Tempra 29 Plus is fairly easy to install and its filter is very easy to clean. This can be a great water heater for anyone out there, but there are some issues. This unit is a bit heavier and requires a bit higher water flows to kick in (0.77 GPM). The best thing is that it costs virtually the same as the 24 Plus model, so you can choose among which suits you best without worrying about the financial part.

Tempra 36 Plus 36 kW

If you own a big house, the Tempra 36 is the German heater you have been looking for. However, before you jump in and buy this product, remember that the Tempra 36 Plus needs a circuit of 3×50 for a total of 150 amps, with my total recommended value of at least 300 amps.

Specifications:

  • Weights 19 lbs. Measures 17 x 15 x 5 inches.
  • Delivers up to 8 GPM for 9 heating elements, heating the water with more than 30 degrees at the maximum flow rate.
  • As the others, has electronic temperature control and operates quietly.
  • Proven reliability, seismic proof construction.
  • No venting required.
  • 240 voltage, 36kW, working pressure 150 PSI, minimum flow to activate 0.77 GPM.

If you own a big house, the Tempra 36 Plus is the water heater that you have been looking for, as this unit will help you save money on energy bills. It can serve 3 bathrooms in the same time with no problems, no matter if you live in warm or cold climates. Best thing about this unit, its price.

  1. We were redesigning our bathroom not so long ago and got rid of our traditional water heater. We bought tankless Stiebel and for now (2 years and counting) we can not be happier about that decision.

It’s impossible to ran out of hot water and I must say my daughters love it… even too much 😉

  2. I am buying my second Tempra Tankless water heater. I bought my first one over 10 years ago :). Problem free for 10 years. The initial installation was expensive. We had to run new cables from the cable box, we also got a new main electrical box. However, we needed a new one anyway. I love taking long hot showers and sometimes taking a bath. We only run into issues when we run both baths. Then the bath gets only mid-level hot, or run the washer on hot with the shower running. Never gives cold water, just reduces the steaming hot to mid-level. However, remember I have technology of 10 years ago. I am sure the models today are much better and should not have any issues supplying hot water to the whole house. Great product, one of my best investments ever.
